This page describes the events of the date listed at the top, a day in which we moved around Twillingate and area a great deal.
Home PageWe started with a picture at the giant lobster trap (see below) and then moved on to a marvellous, privately run museum of the fishing industry in Newfoundland. Later several of us toured around Little Harbour, saw the Auk winery, and then home for dinner.
A description of the first day's events which included:
The day began with a quick trip to the downtown 'giant lobster trap' in Twillingate. It is really just a place for a photo-op, but it was fun nonetheless.
The next stop was the fishing museum outside of Twillingate. This is a marvellous resource, and a lot of fun to explore. It is privately created, and you can really see that the owner is proud of the fishing heritage of the area. It was interesting to see the many artifacts that they had assembled - include the 'make and break' engines that are celebrated in story and song. Ollie got a demonstration of the ubiquitous silly stick that seems to be around the area. Some pictures of that are displayed below.
We also toured the Twillingate Museum, which details much of the history of the area and the town. There was a room dedicated to the medical history of the area, and it turns out that Wilfred Grenville, of Labrador fame, was instrumental in setting up the facilities in the area. Overall, this museum is a very worthwhile visit. There is also a store in the museum, run by volunteers that has a good selection of books about Newfoundland as well as lots of items made by locals. Oliver got a 'pelican hat' there, and a goodly amount of other items were purchased as well.
Just across from the Museum is the Shipbuilding exhibit, which we visited after lunch. A builder explains to the paying guests how he builds the small dories that the region is well know for, and he demonstrated many of the techniques that they use. At the end of that display, he made a small wooden boat for Ollie that was a huge hit - and which got its baptism in the ocean later in the day!
Linda, Jeff, Andy, and Jamie went for a drive while Ollie and Megan rested back at the BnB. We toured the little community of Little Harbour, which is a lovely, tiny little village ideal for photographs of the island lifestyle.
